Our Company History

Meet Kevin Post, owner of DY Mechanical, Inc., doing business as DeYoung Plumbing & Heating and DY Duct Cleaning.

Kevin has a long family heritage in the plumbing and heating trades in the Rensselaer, Jasper County, and Newton County areas. Kevin was introduced to the mechanical trades by his father Phil. Phil and his wife Jean owned and operated DeYoung Plumbing and Heating, Inc. from 1986 through 2009, and Kevin learned the trade while working for them. In much the same fashion, Phil learned the trade from his father, Larry. Larry and his wife Katherine owned and operated DeYoung Plumbing and Heating from 1966 through their retirement in 1986. Prior to 1966, Larry had worked with his father-in-law, Dick DeYoung. Dick owned and operated DeYoung Plumbing (and later DeYoung and Son) from 1946, when he purchased the business from the Shirer family, until he retired in 1966.

Over the years, the family has served the area with a variety of services and specialties. The core business has always been involved in the plumbing and heating trades. Much has changed in the industry in the last four generations. Plumbing has moved from a basic household functional system through many changes to the energy saving and water conserving fixtures of today. Much has changed in the design and appearance of the fixtures, but the underlying focus of the industry remains the protection of the potable water supply. Proper plumbing practices still focus on good sanitation and the protection of the general population from the waterborne diseases which claimed so many lives in the past. The heating industry has also seen many changes from the days of basic central heating to the systems of today. Modern comfort systems include high efficiency heating, central air conditioning, and a variety of indoor air quality components. Four generations of the family have seen many changes and always worked hard to stay abreast of current technology and innovations in the industry.

Many specialties have played a role in the family tradition. Dick DeYoung was a master sheet metal man, and custom sheet metal work is a service that has been passed down through the generations. At one time, "bottled gas" was one of the services, but this was discontinued many years ago. As time went on, air conditioning was added to the list of services as it became a common item in American homes. Increases in equipment efficiency and technology have always provided the need for continuing education and training. One of the more recent additions to the list of services offered is air duct cleaning.

Kevin is continuing in the family tradition of offering quality services to the community, and only time will tell what changes lie in store through this and potential future generations of this tradition.
